What an ad costs.
Back page, full, half, column, block, agate. Never more than eighteen per cent of the paper.
The Gazette is a monthly broadsheet, printed on tabloid newsprint, two dollars, carried by shops and cafes around Providence who keep every cent they take for it. There is no paywall and no subscription; the writing is on paper first and here second.
Most of the advertisers in this paper are owned by the publisher. We would like that to stop being true.
Rate card
Launch rate — Issues I, II and III
These are the launch rates. They hold for anyone who takes space in the first three issues — September, October and November — and they do not move under you once you have bought.
No more than eighteen per cent of any issue is sold. That is a limit on us, not a claim about demand: at twenty-eight pages it is about five pages of advertising and no more, however many people ask. A paper that will sell you any amount of itself is telling you what it thinks of its own pages.
There is no audited circulation behind these rates and we are not going to invent one, so there is no CPM on this page and no rate settled in private. Everyone pays what is printed here. From Issue II we will publish what was printed, what was put out, and what was picked up, by location — and you can price us off that.
Space can be taken in trade rather than cash, at the same value, if what you make is something the paper can use. And any shop that carries a stack gets an agate classified, standing, for nothing — that one is not a favour, it is how the paper gets read.
Sizes and rates
| Back page | 9.9 × 12.9 in | $650 | The whole of the last page. It is the side that faces up on a counter, which is why it is not priced as an interior page. One advertiser, one issue, no sharing. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full page | 9.9 × 12.9 in | $500 | Three columns, full depth. One advertiser to the page, and never opposite another. |
| Half page | 9.9 × 6.3 in | $275 | Three columns, half depth, above or below the fold. |
| Column | 3.1 × 12.9 in | $185 | One column, full depth, set into the run of the paper. |
| Half column | 3.1 × 6.3 in | $110 | One column, half depth, between pieces where the ads already fall. |
| Block | 3.1 × 3.1 in | $65 | One column, a quarter of its depth. The smallest thing with a border round it. |
| Agate classified | 3.1 × 0.75 in | $20 | Type only, no rule, no mark, set in the paper's own agate. Free and standing to anyone carrying a stack. |
Small space costs more by the inch than large space; that is how every newspaper has ever priced and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The page works out at about $3.90 the square inch and the agate at about $8.60. What you are buying at the small end is a position, not an area.
The loose insert
A single sheet, printed on the same stock and laid into every copy, not bound. It is the only thing in the paper that competes with nothing else for the reader's attention, and it is a separate job at the printer.
Priced on the quote for that job, and never below the cost of printing it plus a full page. Ask and we will get the number.
The website
Your ad appears on quackerygazette.com for the run you bought, at no charge, set in the same faces it is set in on paper. The issue is also served whole as a PDF and stays there, so an ad in Issue I is in that file for as long as the site is.
We do not charge for the website because we do not count it. This site stores one number — how many times it has been visited, in total. No paths, no referrers, no identifiers, nothing about you. That is set out on the Policies page and it is not going to change in order to make an ad saleable. Anyone quoting you web impressions for a paper this size should be asked how they counted.
One email a month goes to a plain list of readers — the sign-up is on the Circulation page. When that list is large enough to be worth quoting, we will quote it, because the number of people we sent an email to is a fact we can state without watching anyone.

Mechanicals
- The page is 11 × 14 inches, three columns, half an inch of margin all round. Nothing prints in the margin.
- One ink, black, on newsprint. No colour, no bleed, no reverse type at small sizes — it fills in.
- Vector artwork or type. A photograph will halftone; supply it at 300dpi or larger and expect it to lose its shadows.
- We will set your ad in the paper's own faces at no charge if you would rather not supply artwork.
- Real businesses see their page before it prints. This is not a courtesy — an ad that misrepresents a real trader is our problem, not yours.
Issue IV onward
Rates from Issue IV have not been set. When they are they will appear here with the date they were set, and anyone who bought at the launch rate keeps it for the run they bought.
